Chicago Heights Officer Wins Gold at World Police & Fire Games

Officer Ben Nguyen, left, who participated in and represented the Chicago Heights Police Department at this year's World Police & Fire Games in New York City, receives a proclamation from Mayor David Gonzalez at the October 3rd City Council meeting.
Winning a gold medal and two bronze medals in the recent World Police and Fire Games netted Chicago Heights Police Officer Ben Nguyen special recognition from the city on Monday.
More than 15,000 emergency service workers from more than 50 countries competed in the Olympics-style event that took place Aug. 26 through Sept. 5 in New York City.
Nguyen, 29, took home gold in the 4 by 100-meter relay and bronze in both the 4 by 400-meter relay and the 200-meter individual race.
It was the first time Nguyen competed in the games, which are held every other year.

A five-year veteran of the Chicago Heights Police Department, Nguyen said he enjoys competition and wanted to prove naysayers wrong.
"People told me I wasn't fast anymore ... that I was too old," Nguyen said.
Nguyen said he was pleased with but not entirely surprised by his results.
"I trained extremely hard," Nguyen said. "I expected to place at least in the top three. I guess I'd say I underestimated police and firemen around the world, that they came just as prepared as I was."
Nguyen said that while the main purpose of the games is to promote physical fitness and camaraderie among police and civil service workers, this year's event held special meaning because it was held in New York right around the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and was dedicated to the police and firefighters who lost their lives as a result of the tragedy.
Chicago Heights Mayor David Gonzalez presented Nguyen on Monday with a framed proclamation of congratulations for his athletic achievements.
"It's good for the morale of the city and the Police Department to see the accomplishments that he did for us," Police Chief Michael Camilli said.
