Chicago Heights to install red light cameras
Posted on 2008-04-10 09:54:10 CDT
Chicago Heights soon will have red light traffic cameras positioned and snapping several major intersections around the city.
The city council unanimously approved two measures pertaining to the camera installation Monday night.
Red light cameras photograph vehicles that run traffic signals, and then owners are sent $100 tickets for the offenses.
Aldermen voted to hire Safe Speed, LLC to put-in, maintain and run the program, and also voted to change laws that permit the police department to participate in the enforcement of the program.
Chicago Heights Deputy Police Chief Michael Camilli said red light cameras reduce right-angle crashes which have high fatality rates at busy intersections. read more...

City changes zoning rule to restore value to some homes
Posted on 2008-04-10 09:52:51 CDT
The Chicago Heights City Council approved a zoning ordinance change Monday night that could help hundreds of residents who have been "devastated for years -- people whose homes have been made valueless" by a zoning technicality.
An ordinance that went into effect in the '90s, officials said, required homes be built on lots of at least 50 feet. This was done to discourage lesser-value, smaller homes. read more...

Chicago Heights 'rescues' homeowners
Posted on 2008-04-08 08:58:31 CDT
Chicago Heights City Council could help hundreds of residents who have been "devastated" for years - people whose homes have been made "valueless" by their failure to comply with a zoning technicality.
An ordinance created in the 1990s required that homes be built on lots of at least 50 feet. This was done to discourage lesser-value, smaller homes.
But according to city officials, hundreds of homes built before this ordinance don't conform to this standard.
A zoning change approved Monday night could fix this. read more...

Police: Sting not last answer
Posted on 2008-04-02 10:50:12 CDT
The large-scale drug sting last week in Chicago Heights went a long way toward making the area "palatable" in the short term, but did little to put a dent in the area's crime and drug problems over the long haul, experts said.
Last week's undercover sting that targeted the city's east side was the culmination of nearly eight months of investigation, surveillance and intelligence gathering. The busts led to about 100 arrests and were done by a joint force of the Cook County sheriff's police; the Chicago Heights, Ford Heights and Hazel Crest police departments; and the state's attorney's office.
Busts like these, which occur every so often in heavy drug trafficking areas of Chicago Heights, "keep the line between peace and chaos," for a short period of time, said Lt. David Basile, who heads a community policing unit for the Chicago Heights Police Department. read more...

City eyes red light cameras
Posted on 2008-03-27 09:41:45 CDT
If you run a red light in Chicago Heights, you might as well say, "cheese."
The city is set to be the latest municipality in the Southland to add red light traffic cameras at several major intersections.
These cameras snap photographs of vehicles that run red lights and then owners are sent $100 tickets for the offenses.
Recently, Tinley Park, Orland Park and South Chicago Heights approved similar measures.
"It's all about safety," Chicago Heights Deputy Police Chief Michael Camilli said. read more...

Chicago Heights awarded grant for storm cleanup
Posted on 2008-03-06 10:19:13 CST
The city of Chicago Heights is receiving about $104,000 in Federal Emergency Management Agency grant funds, money that will help reimburse the city for the cleanup of the Aug. 23 storms that ravaged Cook County.
While it's a hefty amount of cash, this figure falls well short of the sum city officials applied for - $200,000.
The city's director of city services and projects, Michael Sabo, who has handled the grant proposal for months, said the total cost of the cleanup was $250,000.
But even though he didn't get what he wanted, he'll take what he can get.
"It's wonderful," Sabo said, indicating this was an expense the city would have had to eat in full had he not applied for the grant. read more...

Ward meeting focuses on crime
Posted on 2008-03-03 09:44:38 CST
Chicago Heights officials want the public to know, "there's guys working behind the scenes," in the police department.
Capt. Brian Smith, who heads a Special Operations Unit of the Chicago Heights Police Department, was invited by 4th Ward Ald. Joe Faso to speak at a joint 4th and 6th ward meeting last week.
"We want people to know: there's guys crawling around on their hands and knees," Faso said of the purpose of the invite.
Smith's unit is part-time, the longtime captain said, and is called in for special operations on an as-needed basis.
The city also has a separate full-time special operations unit. read more...

City hires consultant to lay groundwork for development
Posted on 2008-02-25 13:58:00 CST
Chicago Heights officials said they'll have "one quarterback overseeing everything," in terms of planning for development in the downtown and East Side.
City corporation counsel TJ Somer made this football reference in regard to the city's hiring of PGAV Urban Consulting on Tuesday to perform more than $100,000 in consulting work, to be spread across three separate studies.
This consulting appears to be an initial step toward developing vacant property in an area that could one day surround a proposed Metra commuter station. read more...

Police warn of phone scam
Posted on 2008-01-28 09:09:55 CST
Chicago Heights police are warning residents about a telephone scam that's hit several people in the city and may pose a security risk to victims' personal information.
"They really sell you (on the scam)," said Lt. Michael Romano, who issued a news release on the matter.
According to Romano, the scam begins with a call (which may appear as though it's coming from a prison on caller identification). When answered, the call goes straight to a recording. read more...
